Getting started

Connect your AI

Choose the account you want Operator to use. You can connect during first-time setup, or change the connection later in profile menu → Settings → AI.

Your Operator license unlocks the extension. Your AI account supplies the models. Provider charges and usage limits are separate, including during Operator's free trial.

Choose your provider

Claude — sign in with an account

Use an account with access to Claude Code.

  1. During setup, choose Claude. If you are already in the panel, open Settings → AI, select Claude, then Claude Code.
  2. Choose Sign in when prompted.
  3. Complete Anthropic's authorization in your browser using the account you want to use.
  4. Return to Operator. If the status has not updated, use Recheck in Settings.

When Operator shows that you are signed in, choose a model and try your first prompt. If it recognizes an existing sign-in during setup, it may offer Use Claude instead.

Your account must include the required access. For a work account, your administrator may also need to allow Claude Code.

Claude — use an API key

  1. Create an API key in the Anthropic Console.
  2. During Operator setup, choose Use an API key instead, then Claude.
  3. Paste the key into the API-key field and choose Connect.

Already set up? Open Settings → AI → Claude → API key, enter the key, then press Enter or click outside the field to save it.

API usage is billed through your Anthropic API account. Keep your key private; do not paste it into a chat or support message.

OpenAI — sign in with an account

Use a ChatGPT account with access to Codex.

  1. During setup, choose ChatGPT. If you are already in the panel, open Settings → AI, select OpenAI, then Codex.
  2. Choose Sign in when prompted.
  3. Complete OpenAI's authorization in your browser.
  4. Return to Operator. If the status has not updated, use Recheck in Settings.

When Operator shows that you are signed in, choose a model and try your first prompt. If it recognizes an existing sign-in during setup, it may offer Use ChatGPT instead.

Your account's access and usage limits apply. Signing into ChatGPT and using an OpenAI API key are different billing paths.

OpenAI — use an API key

  1. Create an API key in the OpenAI Platform.
  2. During Operator setup, choose Use an API key instead, then OpenAI.
  3. Paste the key into the API-key field and choose Connect.

Already set up? Open Settings → AI → OpenAI → API key, enter the key, then press Enter or click outside the field to save it.

This uses your OpenAI API account, not your ChatGPT subscription allowance. Check your API billing and usage limits if a request is refused.

Gemini — use an API key

  1. Create an API key in Google AI Studio.
  2. During Operator setup, choose Use an API key instead, then Gemini.
  3. Paste the key into the API-key field and choose Connect.

Already set up? Open Settings → AI → Gemini, enter the key, then press Enter or click outside the field to save it.

Gemini currently uses an API key in Operator. A Gemini consumer subscription is not an alternative sign-in method here. Available models, quotas and billing are set by Google.

Check the connection

Open a composition and send a small request. A saved API key is not a guarantee that the account has available credits or permission to use every model.

If you see a sign-in, model-access or quota error, follow Troubleshooting. You do not need to reinstall an AI command-line tool.
